Organization and use issues with serials

It is well known that many users are unaware of the existence or significance of serial publications, even though the serial organization is important. For a collection to be active and services oriented, it needs to be in an accessible sequence, and taking into account the steadily growing size of library collections, the materials need to be arranged according to some system to enable format and easy access to them.

The catalog and bibliographic description of the contents are often the first to be organized. Unless checking and collection of serials are assigned to subprofessional assailants who have been trained to watch and record the various technical details that are supposed to be in the investigated and noted collection, it can take time and be time-consuming. As noted by Osborn, “the cost of the collection can be reduced with the division of labor and the catalogs production increase at the same time.” The issue of understaffing is evident. The challenge with establishing and running such a program is that the collection is compelled by careful serials, catalogs, and facts.

Determining the level of description of a work and whether such a work deserves description codes will be necessary is another issue that is present in the organization of serial publications. Typically, the division in this matter is heavily dependent on the administrative policy of a specific library and its local needs. Also, the public library’s ability to accommodate home users faces a bigger difficulty due to the serials’ ongoing addition to publishing rates across all fields. Ukon bemoaned that “cataloging challenges in Nigerian libraries are so diverse and solutions have taken so long that it is time something conceptual to be done” because of this.

The class system has also been significantly impacted by new ideas, discoveries, and inventions that have caused changes in workers’ perspectives. For instance, subjects may switch from one area of knowledge to another as a result of subject fusion. Aeronautics, which was formerly a subfield of physics but has now found a new home in the realm of applied science, is a very excellent illustration of this. This confused users, time-wasting on the side of the classifier, and distortion of structured information in the library. The fact that all classification schemes were developed relatively recently to accommodate the various subject titles that were in existence at the time is another issue with classifying serials.

This is particularly evident in the science field where there is the consistency of information and discoveries of such a schemes of subjects. categorization includes challenges with categorizing newly found topic fields, scientific journals are a crucial main source of knowledge in science among researchers and public libraries, and classifiers and libraries face these challenges regularly (especially in public library systems in organizing their serial collection). Mullins (1992) describes the issues with labor-intensive check-in procedures and the challenges of categorizing. He also mentions the lack of standards for serials categorization. Many libraries may lack the equipment needed for cataloging and categorization.

Szilvassy (1996) discussed the issues caused by the lack of full organizational tools.
He asserts that the bulk of serials created in less developed nations contains insufficient bibliographic information, which makes organization difficult.
The use of serials in academic libraries is impacted by availability and use issues. The user may make some progress in their study work and publishing output while the serials are either unavailable or inaccessible. Due to the lack of international publications, most Nigerian and African academics were unable to stay up to date with the most recent research in their field, which adds another layer to the issue.

The Guardian, July 11, 2005, p. 16. Every year, several new magazines enter the market, for example in Nigeria, however, the majority of them only publish their initial one or two issues. Due to the academic library’s subpar collection management procedures, patrons have restricted access to serials. Users are at a disadvantage while trying to read an electronic full-text publication due to a lack of fundamental internet connection infrastructure. The usage of serials is also impacted by inadequate serial use of supporting facilities and services in libraries.

Serials’ availability and accessibility in libraries are further impacted by the issues with putting, destroying, disorganization, and exploitation of serials by cunning characters, insects, rats, and mold, as described by Akindode (1998).
The user can only make limited progress in their study projects while the serials are either unavailable or inaccessible.
