The tropical cucurbit Telfaria occidentalis (Hook) is a member of the huge Cucurbitaceae family, which also includes gourds, pumpkins, squashes, and melons. Okoli and Mgbeogu have described the crop’s botany (1983). The fast-growing, climber annual fluted pumpkin produces large, fluted or wrinkled fruits. Two or more fruits may grow on the creeping stalk. Fruits can weigh up to 10 kg and take 5 months to reach full maturity. Weight ranges from 2 to 5 kg for small fruits. Fruits are filled with seeds; small fruits can have up to 30 seeds, large fruits can have up to 70 seeds, and very large fruits can have up to 100 seeds.
