1. Immunization and prevention of Disease in Child

Immunization remains one of the most important public health interventions and a cost effective strategy to reduce both the morbidity and mortality associated with communicable diseases. Over two million deaths are prevented through immunization each year worldwide. Despite this, vaccine preventable diseases remain the most common cause of childhood mortality with an estimated 3 million deaths each year.

Maternal mortality continues to be a global burden worldwide. Each year, more than 200 million women become pregnant and a large number of mothers die as a result of complications of pregnancy or childbirth. Nigeria is still one of those developing countries with high maternal mortality ratio and child mortality rate, estimated at 340/100,000 and 21/1000 live births respectively. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recommended the use of partograph to monitor labour and delivery, in order to improve healthcare and reduce maternal and foetal mortality rate.

3. Prevalence and Risk Factors of Low Back Pain among Workers

Background: Low back pain (LBP) has been documented to be a common occupational health problem among health care workers. A cross sectional study was carried out in a health facility in South – South Nigeria to determine the prevalence and risk factors of low back pain among the workers. Materials and Methods: Data was collected using a self designed, interviewer assisted, semistructured questionnaire. Information obtained included socio-demographic characteristics, work history of respondents, prevalence and factors predisposing to low back pain. The tool was administered during the different shifts of the health workers. Frequencies were calculated and Fishers exact test was used to test the significance of association between different variables. Level of significance was set at 0.05. Results: A total of 50 out of 53 workers participated in the study. The mean age of the respondents was 36.59±8.6 years with a male to female ratio of 2:3. The overall prevalence of LBP

4. Public perception of midwives service scheme

The Midwives Service Scheme (MSS) was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria to reverse the country’s unacceptably high maternal and neonatal mortality. It has been in operation for over five years (2009) and it became imperative to review its success. This study therefore assessed the effectiveness of the Midwives Service Scheme (MSS) in Oyo state. The study was carried out in Akinyele, Lagelu and Ibarapa East Local Government Areas (LGAs). Multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select 135 beneficiaries from the study area. Data on characteristics of the respondents, benefits derived, constraints to effectiveness and perceived effectiveness of the scheme were collected through structured questionnaire administered to (135) beneficiaries of MSS in Oyo state.

5. Attitude and use of traditional medicines among pregnant women

The use of herbal medicines by pregnant women in Nigeria was seen to be quite high. Many patients have confidence in the efficacy of herbal remedies and found them helpful as a cost effective and accessible alternative treatment. Health care providers, especially those that are involved in ante-natal, pre-natal and post partum care should therefore be aware of evidence regarding potential benefits or harm of herbal medicinal agents when used by pregnant women, since many of these herbal remedies are self -prescribed based on the women’s own information or belief.

6. Adherence To Self Care Activities Of Type 2 Diabetic Patients

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic progressive metabolic disorder characterized by high blood glucose `mainly due to absolute or relative lack of a hormone known as insulin (Shrivastava and Ramasamy, 2013). The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC, 2012) defined it as a group of diseases characterized by high blood glucose. Diabetes mellitus is a systemic disease that is chronic and severe. The disease occurs when the body cannot use the insulin it produces effectively or when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin (World Health Organization (WHO, 2009).  Other cardinal symptoms of diabetes mellitus include excessive thirst, excessive urination and excessive hunger. Death rates for heart diseases and the risk of stroke are about 2 to 4 times higher among adults with diabetes mellitus than among those without diabetes (CDC, 2011).

Nursing profession is the largest health care workforce in the healthcare system having more direct contact with patients. 10. Mothers’ knowledge, beliefs and practices regarding febrile convulsions

Background: This study investigated mothers’ knowledge, beliefs and practices regarding febrile convulsion and how it is being managed in homes among women with children under five years (0-5)Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 50 women with children with the diagnosis of febrile seizures. Data was collected by the researcher using structured questionnaires. Results: It was found that majority, 35(70%)of the mothers were able to described febrile convulsions as a sickness in children which is exhibited by the child twitching or fitting, with eyes wide opened. Only 25(50%) of the mothers indicated that febrile convulsion is caused by high fever (high body temperature) but could not specify the number of degrees Celsius due to high illiteracy rates amongst women in Ghana. The results also showed that, a substantial number 27 (48%) of the mothers had the belief that febrile convulsion is normally caused by witchcraft and evil spirits while 8 (16%) of the respondents hold beliefs that a sore in the child’s abdomen can cause convulsions. Regarding the home management of febrile convulsions most of the women indicated that tepid sponging the child, bathing the child with cold water; putting spoon in child’s mouth and using traditional herbal preparation to rub all over the child’s body or it into the child’s nostrils. Conclusion: The study concluded that even though majority of mothers have good knowledge about febrile convulsion and its first aid interventions at home, a good number of mothers still have negative beliefs regarding the cause of the condition.
