COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF PHYTOCHEMICAL AND MINERAL COMPOSITE OF CARICA PAPAYA SEED

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Fruits are excellent sources of nutrients such as minerals, vitamins and carbohydrates in the form of soluble sugars, cellulose and starch. They form a vital portion of an adequate diet and also serve as food supplement and appetizer. Rural populace in most developing countries consume fruits, seeds and leaves of many wild plants. There are instances where the leaves, seeds and fruit are used in the preparation of traditional native dishes (Feng, 2014). Economically, pawpaw (Carica papaya Linn.) is the most important fruit in the Caricaceae family with over 22 species while only one member of the genus Carica is cultivated as the fruit tree (Claudia et al., 2014). Pawpaw was originally derived from the southern part of Mexico, and it is a constant plant that is presently distributed over the  whole tropical area (Claudia et al., 2014). According to Food and Agriculture Organization

(FAO, 2007), it is an invaluable plant that is prevalent throughout tropical Africa and Nigeria was reported to be the third largest producer globally. It is eaten because of its nutritional value and its medicinal properties (Mello et al., 2008; Krishna et al., 2008). This also makes it of economic value. The fruit is an excellent source of calcium, pro-vitamin A, and vitamin C (ascorbic acid); thus, it is widely used in diets (Serrano and Cattaneo, 2010).

The seeds account for about 16 % of the fresh fruit weight and each seed is made up of sarcotesta and endosperm (Pungasari et al., 2004). Pawpaw seed extracts had been shown to have several medicinal as well as nutritional properties (Mello et al., 2008). Several species of Caricaceae have been used as medication against a variety of diseases (Mello et al., 2008). It had been argued by scientists that all parts of a pawpaw plant, including the seeds, roots, rinds, and fruits have positive effects on general health preventing diseases (Seigler et al., 2002). It is worthy of mention that fermented Pawpaw seed had been used to produce analogue product of the locally produced “Daddawa” normally produced from locust beans as reported by Dakare et al.(2011).

The chemical composition of these seeds reported by Pungasari et al. (2004) revealed that they are rich in proteins content (27.3-28.3%). Previous studies on Carica papaya seed had focused on the seed functional properties (Adesuyi and Ipinmoroti, 2011), physiochemical properties (Claudia et al., 2014), antioxidant properties (Maisarah et al., 2014), amino acid profiling (Samia et al., 2012), proximate analysis (Adesuyi and Ipinmoroti, 2011) and oil (Syed et al., 2012). A more efficient method of utilizing oilseed flour is to process its flour into protein concentrate and isolate products with high protein content and desirable functional characteristics (Molina-Ortiz et al., 2004). In view of the protein content of pawpaw seed reported by previous studies, processing the whole flour to protein rich products such as defatted flour, protein concentrate and protein isolate could enhance its utilization as protein supplement. Presently, there are no literatures on the production and utilization of the defatted flour, protein concentrate and protein isolate from pawpaw which necessitated this study. However, the performance of any protein as functional ingredients in food processing will depend on the physicochemical, functional and nutritional characteristics of the protein products, hence the objectives of this study.

EFFECT OF FERTILIZER ON FARM BUSINESS IN NIGERIA A STUDY OF BENUE STATE

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to determine The Effect Of Fertilizer On Farm Business in Nigeria a study  Benue  State. A total of 31 respondent participated in the study. Structured questionnaires were used to obtained information from the respondent which happens to be extension agents. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as percentage mean and frequency distributions revealed that some of the constraints to fertilizer use covering the extension agents are high cost of product, untimely delivery of the fertilizer, insufficient supply, scarcity of the fertilizer when it is needed by the farmers. Recommendations were made that extension agents require constant training and re-training to be conversant with recent technology development so as to disseminate same to farmers who lack the basic knowledge on recommended application of fertilizers. Fertilizer subsidy programme should continue but with reform such as the use of the voucher system to pave way for direct engagement with farmers instead of through middle men so that fertilizer can continue to be affordable by all farmers that need them.

CHAPTER ON/INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Nigeria is predominantly an agricultural country although the contribution of agriculture to the cross domestic product (GDP) has over the years reflected low production and productively etc. Data shows that gross domestic production tell from 80% in the 1950’s to 43% in the 1970’s, between 1960 and 1975, annual output of food has remain largely unchanged. Nigerian population has increased from 55.7million to 745 million using estimates of 2.55 million annual increases before 1970 (FAO, 2011). Fertilizer subsidy have played an important role in promoting increase use if fertilizer and to significantly increase yield of food crop Moris et al., (2012). Thus, Nigerian farmers including those in Cross River State will be willing to make increase use of fertilizer. Nigeria with a population of about 144 million and a growth relate of 3.2% per annum if not checked, of Nigeria will double in less than 25 years (Oludipupo 2008).

Agriculture has recorded the growth rate well above 5% in recent years compared with less than 2% growth of early 80’s. However, the government has made its contribution to fertilizer use by subsidizing the product thereby products at lower costs. Former obtain the fertilizer subsidy can be said to be input made to fertilizer that helps to reduce its cost to farmers.

 

According to Akinyosoye (2010), despite this measure taken by the government, there is still low use of fertilizer among farmers in the country. The primary constraints to fertilizer use in the country is physical absence of the product at the time it is needed rather than problem of affordability or farmers lack of knowledge on the use of fertilizer (Aja, 2010). Fertilizer has to be recognized as one of the inputs that holds the key to increased food production in Nigeria Tisdale et al., (2004). Fertilizer could be organic or inorganic (minerals), organic fertilizers are those fertilizer developed from plant and animal residues while inorganic or mineral fertilizers are synthesized from chemical substances. The minerals are of different types and grades depending on the nutrient level, extension agents are more concerned about this fertilizer use and are out to ensure that they get to the small scale farmers to facilities adequate usage and to investigate the constraints to its use. As a matter of fact, over the years by trial and error, extension has identified fertilizer types which are suitable not only to their crops need but also to their soil conclusion.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In spite of the long years of fertilizer subsidy programme in Nigeria, there is still low use of fertilizers by farmers in the country. Agricultural extension service is the main custodian of knowledge of appropriate fertilizer application recommended to farmers (Adesima 2011). Several studies have reported that the primary constraints to fertilizer use in the country is physical absence of the product at the time it is needed rather than the problem of affordability by farmers (Ejiga et al., 2012). A contradicting intension appears to exist between efforts being made by government to boost food production and the actual use of the subsidized fertilizer. It is for these obvious reasons that this study was conducted to assess the socio-economic characteristics of extension agents, examine fertilizer use among farmers, and determine effect of fertilizer on farm business in Nigeria, with a special attention in Benue state

1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The main purpose of this study is to determine the effect of fertilizer on farm business. The specific objectives include:

  1. To examine the various factors affecting fertilizer use among farmers
  2. To analyze farmers perception of constraints to fertilizer use among farmers

1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study is on Effect Of Fertilizer On Farm Business. It was exclusively limited to Benue state, Nigeria.

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

It is hoped that this research will be useful to agricultural researchers, farmers and other similar organization that may want to know the general response of fertilization on farm business in Nigeria. 

1.7 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

It is necessary to mention some of the limitation of this research work. The chief limitation is the difficulty in obtaining relevant information in that a few of our values were missing but these missing values were not statistically significant enough to be noticed.

1.8 DEFINITION OF TERMS

  1. Organic: produced by or from living things.
  2. Inorganic: not consisting of or coming from any living substances.
  3. Fertilizer: a substance added to soil to make plants grow more successfully.
  4. Crops: a plant that is grown in large quantities, especially as food.
  5. Synthetic: artificial; made by combining chemical substances rather than being produced naturally by plants or animals.
  6. Soil: the top layer of the earth, in which plants, trees etc grow.

Negative effects of chemical on agricultural production in Nigeria

INTRODUCTION

Agrochemicals are exceedingly dangerous and have been associated with serious issues with human health and the environment (Briggs et al, 1989). One of the major causes of ground water contamination is the extensive use of agrochemicals in agricultural areas (Singh et al., 2004) Despite only making up 20% of the world’s pesticide consumption, less developed countries are responsible for around half of all human poisonings, according to Konradsenet al. Many chemicals still used in agriculture and industry are categorized by the Stockholm Convention as persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which have negative effects on human health and the environment (Ashburner and Friedrich,2001).

Consumers today demand high standards in marketed and processed foods with an emphasis especially on agricultural techniques with little to no negative environmental impact since they are becoming more and more conscious of the significance of food safety (MOA, JICA, 2004). Prior pilot studies on pesticide handling in Thailand, Guatemala, and Kenya demonstrated that the level of control increases until the product reaches the retailer’s shelf.

Abstract

Microbial quality evaluation of Awara sold within University of Maiduguri, Borno State was carried out. Results indicates that all the samples collected from the four cardinal point were highly contaminated, The South East (Commercial Area) which is the second cardinal point had the highest total aerobic bacteria count of 9.60×102CFU/g and North West (Unimaid Quarters) which is the fourth cardinal point had the lowest count of 4.53×102CFU/g. South East had the highest coliform count of 3.87×102CFU/g while North West had the lowest coliform count of 157×102CFU/g. Total yeast ranged from 3.33×102 in South East to 1.07×102CFU/g in South West (Acada Area). Total mould was high in South East with 2.67×102CFU/g while North West had the lowest mould count of 1.00×102CFU/g. Staphylococcus count was high in North East (Complex Area) which ranged from 3.57×102 to 1.57×102CFU/g in North West (Unimaid Quarters). Although all the Awara samples showed growth on various culture media with varying counts but the population was not high enough to produce effective dose. However, the need for processors of Awara to adopt strict hygiene practices cannot be overemphasized.
