An Analysis of Marriage Proposal and Engagement under Islamic Law

ABSTRACT

Khibah and Courtship are critical stages in the formation of a married family and are greatly dependent on the moral atmosphere of a given community at a given time. It is a perilous stage in which individuals either build or destroy their marriage. As marriage proposals and the steps taken by prospective spouses to have a better understanding of one another are Shariah-compliant processes that follow defined ethical criteria. However, these good actions have been distorted by contemporary young prospective Muslim couples in northern Nigeria, harming the married couple’s socio-moral position and, in some circumstances, the unborn child as well as the larger community.
