DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF WOOD LATHE MACHINE
1.0 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
Wood Turning is becoming renovating, and there are now tools and accessories that had never before been dreamed about. Woodturning is the art of shaping a rotating piece of wood by the application of sharp tools. The machine that holds and rotates the wood is a lathe. The wood turning lathe is a simple work shop tool that can greatly expand your woodworking horizon. If you want to shape table legs, chair spindles, and bedposts or add embellishments to your furniture in the form of drawer pulls, cabinet knobs, and finials, then you need a lathe. And if you want to make bowls, plates, stool seats, table tops, and lidded boxes, a lathe is an indispensable machine
The earliest lathes were made of wood, and the use of wood as a bed material has survived to the present. More commonly today, though, lathes are made with all-metal parts. You are likely to encounter several lathe-construction materials: cast iron, fabricated steel, steel stampings, cast aluminium, cast zinc, and extruded aluminium.
We tried to improve more on this machine so that it can turn wood with little or no stress and also increase it’s durability
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The main objectives of this project are to:
- Improve the machine produced by our predecessor
- To fabricate tools or provide for the machine
- Use the tools to provide an item that is marketable
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
As the day go by technology grow, the sole purpose of engineering is to improve the standard of living, in this case the wood lathe machine is made to ease shaping of woods by rotating the wood and feeding the work tool, and also save time.
The present movement of the tailstock and tool post defect the purpose of saving time because of its difficulty to slide, also the large speed of the lathe and vibration of the machine makes it difficult to accommodate bigger work which required lower speed and for a good work piece to be produce.
PURPOSE OF STUDY
The improvement in the design of wood lathe machine aim to increase production and ease in scraping and cutting off wood
SCOPE OF WORK
The machine comprises of the frame made of metal, with the headstock fixed in position, the tailstock moves along the bed of the machine, and the tool rest mounted on a cross slide which can be moved both longitudinally and transversely on the bed. It is located between the head stock and the tailstock.
In operations, the machine is limited to only scraping and cutting of any type of wood. Drilling operations cannot be performed on this machine.
