CHAPTER ONE/INTRODUCTION

1.1  Background of the Study

Throughout commercial airline history, the timely movement of aircraft, passengers and cargo has required the even more timely movement of information. This was never truer than today, where information has become not just an operational tool, but a competitive weapon. To capitalize on this information, the technological revolution and the information society have brought us a dazzling set of capabilities. But, they have also brought us a bewildering array of options for services, costs, methods and products. Many managers find themselves faced with too much of a good thing, too many alternatives. But, airline today means business. Commerce and tourism are the engines of economic development in today’s world. In Airline industry, Airlines, airports, and even governments are competing against each other for travel related income. Staying in front means making investments in enhanced customer service tools, improved management awareness, quicker access to operational information, etc.

All of the technology and service options, and the need to make rapid, well informed decisions, means that many organizations are finding it increasingly difficult, and expensive, to find and retain staff to meet the demands. The effective use of Airline Information System can help solve this problem.

Multi-database system for seat booking and ticketing is a very powerful integrated computer-based system for managing the technical operations activities of an airline, or aircraft fleet operator. The system can be used worldwide by large and small companies operating many types of fixed and rotary-wing aircraft.

The software designed will be used to collect, store, and analyze information about seat booking and ticketing within the industry.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

As aviation industry is expanding, a lot of airlines are coming up. The

passengers need to book for their flight tickets. The manual method of going

to their local offices to book for their flight ticket is becoming obsolete and

tasking. Flight schedule information needs to be publicized to passengers.

Hence the need for a wide range of publicity and enabling direct information

passage to the centers.

1.3 Aims and Objectives of the Study

In developing an airline seat booking system, we will always keep in

mind to provide to the users the best usability, flexibility and security.

Therefore, we need to make the user interface very flexible and

understandable.  Moreover, since the record updates is a database we need to

consider about security issues so that flight booking information retrieval is not interrupted. The new system is designed to take care of the following:

Create an online system for customers to view all domestic flights.

Create an online system for customers to view domestic flight schedule and their flight rate.

Enable online flight bookings.

Give online access to passenger’s suggestions or complaint on flight operations.

Showcase flight maintenance information to customers

Give passengers access to send their complaint about flight operations or services.

Creates online news publication for flight operators accessible to customers.

Makes available the number of flights operated by an airline.

Maintain a robust database for flight information management

1.1 INTRODUCTION

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) was established in 1988 vide FRSC Act Cap 141 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria LFN, 1990 as amended and today, FRSC (Establishment) Act, 2007 is the lead agency with statutory responsibility of overseeing Road Traffic Administration and Safety Management matters in Nigeria.

One of the challenges facing man today is how to effectively manage the enormous information he has acquired over the years.

Management in any given organization would keep proper record administrative record or personal record to mention apart from these, report can be generated which assist management in decision making. They play a role of properly organized file keeping system in management decision making.

The computerized management information system will ensure accurate report generation for management to plan, organized, control and coordinate the activities of the computerization, the computer department in any organization deals with the handing of the organization’s information on system which includes maintenance and documentation of employer’s profile and ensuring that their welfare is taken into consideration. It also maintains a good human relationship with the employers ensuring their physical fitness to enable them give maximum man power for efficient output.

1.2 Statement of Problem

The way and manner motorists use the roads leave much to be desired. Vehicle drivers take delight in driving on wrong lanes and even abuse the right of way rules, thereby creating conflict in the use of traffic, course delay and sometimes accident. This has lead to enormous road traffic offence on our roads particularly in the cities. This is attributable to poor road traffic offence management. Improved computerized Management Information Systems is the fundamental and the bedrock for increase in Information Technology (IT). Because of the importance of the improved information technology (IT), measures are taken to evolve all sectors of the economy into improved Information Technology compliant. The road traffic offence information sector should not be left out, because an increase in the use of improved information management technology has greater advantages, where process of collecting, processing, storage, retrieval and dissemination of road traffic offence information for the purposes of planning, controlling, coordinating and decision making are not in tone with times. The existing system of road traffic offence gives no room for pictorial identification of offenders. Hence wrong person could be accused. The system is decentralized making road traffic offence information manipulation and accessibility of the database difficult. Also the system has no room for pictorial diagram display of the offence committed, as well as the penalty of offence as an evidence to facilitate prosecution. Hence the offender often sees himself as being compelled to accept responsibility.

1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

  1. To design an application program that can be used by federal road safety commission to keep offenders record.
  2. To relieve the staff of too much work load associated with manual entry of record.
  3. To provide application program that can be used to generate error free     reports and accurate information.
  4. To provide tool that will be used to avoid loss of data or information as a result of files transfer.
  5. To design a form that can be used to add offender(s) record, edit record and create a database that can be used to store record.
  6. To design application that will enable quick access to any record of file and display list and also compute the total amount to be paid by offenders for whatever offence

1.4 Significance of Study

Road traffic Information Management System provides road traffic information that is needed to manage road traffic organizations efficiently and effectively. Road traffic information management and the information it generates are generally considered essential components of prudent and reasonable business decisions. With the growth in information technology, the study offers numerous benefits to the Federal Road Safety Commission and other organisations that deal with road traffic offence information management. There are many reasons why a research on the road traffic offence information management system should be made at this time. The chief reasons being that:

  • Road traffic offence information management system uses integrated database-stores all road traffic offence information in a single database. This enhances fast, timely and secured accessibility and sharing of road traffic offence reports for the agency’s decision making
  • Identifying road traffic offenders with their pictorial images will aid the agency in authentic documentation and avoid prosecuting wrong persons.
  • Often times, Offenders deny ever committing a crime they are apprehended for due to absence of diagram sketch/pictorial display showing the crime committed. Displaying offender crime for the offender to see enhance the agency’s credibility and makes FRSC road traffic information reports reliable.

1.5     Scope of the Study

The study shall concentrate on importance of information and communication technology to road traffic safety management discussions as well as research works on attempts to improve on road safety management will be reviewed. It shall examine the state of FRSC and then propose a system to arrest the identified lapses militating against road traffic offence information management in Nigeria. 

1.6 Definition of terms

Terms are contextual. Words have the tendency to derive their meanings within the context of their use. This section of the chapter is devoted to the definition of road traffic computer terms used in this dissertation. This is important because road traffic information management terms are defined differently by different researchers, so specific definition of the terms as they apply to this study is therefore necessary to enable the readers to fully understand the meaning of the study and its proper significance.

Road Traffic Offence

This phrase refers to any act that causes or liable to cause violation of road traffic rules and regulations. Road traffic offence is an action taken or action not taken that violates road safety rules and regulation. For instance not reporting a road traffic accident is a road traffic offence.

 Information Technology

This term also called information system refers to a set of interrelated components that work together to collect, retrieve, process, store and disseminate information for the purpose of facilitating planning, control, co-ordinating and decision making. It usually includes hardware, software, people, communication systems, and data.

Information and Communication Technology

This refers to the fusion of Telecommunications, Electronics and Computer Information Systems used to retrieve, analyze, store, process, transmit, secure and intelligently interpret digital data either in storage or in transit

Intelligent Transport Systems

This refers to wide area of information based on wireless technology combined into infrastructure of transport system and the vehicle itself, these systems help in controlling and managing of traffic flows, reducing of traffic, finding alternative routes, saving of the environment as well as saving time

DEVELOPMENT OF A WEB-BASED TAX ASSESSMENT SYSTEM

ABSTRACT

The aim of this project was to develop a web-based system that will contain all the information about the private sector assets for tax assessment. The objective was to register and assess all the assets of the entire private sectors establishment in a particular area for tax payment. These assets include: land, heavy equipment, light equipment, motor/vehicle, residential building, commercial building, and industrial building etc. The system will carry out tax assessment of the assets and enable the user to know the amount of money to pay on for the assets as tax. The system performs the following function: e-registration, tax evaluation, listing of designated banks, tax offices, and business firms. A questionnaire was used as an instrument for data collection on information about the existing system. A Structural System Analysis and Design Methodology (SSADM) were used in the design of the software. The system was implemented using WAMP SERVER, PHP, HTML, CSS and MYSQL technologies. The result of the study revealed that the web-based system enables a client to register his/her business, generate an acknowledgement slip, conduct a tax evaluation of his assets, generate a tax invoice, display a list of officially designated banks for tax payment, display a list of tax offices. and also display a list of existing business firms in the area covered by the web-based system.Download Full Material-N5000

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

This chapter discusses the introductory part of the thesis which includes background of the study, research motivations and goals, the research questions the thesis attempts to answer, the methodology used to answer those questions and finally the summary of the thesis contribution to knowledge.

Background to the Study

 

Central system for course rating and evaluating by students is a web-based course evaluation tool to help rate courses and instructors. The electronic questionnaire allows students to provide feedback, which is used to improve courses and instruction. All course ratings are confidential. After the course ratings period ends and final grades are posted, instructors can access the results for each course, but they cannot link responses to individual students.

 

A lot of issue has been developed due to this course system method which has been conducting manually using a software called Microsoft Excel. All lecturers are having their preferable courses where their expertise field play the most important role on that issue. The lecturer is the biggest guide for the student lecturing in the courses that students taking on the semester. It doesn’t mean that all the lecturer can only teach few courses according to their expertise to be lectured for the students but they also can teach all courses which has not on their expertise field. Due to that doing on manual student course rating system they could not get the preferred course, due to that a system has to be develop accordingly. The system also minimizes the usage of paperwork and user friendly for the administrators to log in and edit if any changes required for the course allocation. The system will print out a output of a list stated for lecturers on their preferred course.

A major challenge faced by university academics is the effective management of large amounts and various types of data that are encountered in day-to-day operation, ranging from personal data to varied types of documents. The data have various access privileges and restrictions and will be input by a variety of sources, ranging from individuals themselves (e.g., a current student or applicant submits a resume), to a member of the faculty to a member of the departmental administration (e.g., Head of Department who manages the affairs of the Department), to automatic uploading of transcripts or test scores for an applicant. Automatically generated statistics regarding this information will be used by many different stakeholders, both inside and outside the department. Traditional paper- based operation is not only costly but also ineffective.

We designed and implemented a central system for course ratingto effectively manage school information. The design of the overall system follows the guidelines from the Design Science for Information System (Hevner A., et al, 2004)and benefits from the study in Computer-Supported Co-operative Work (CSCW) (Grundin, Computer Supported Cooperative Work History and Focus, 2005). To increase the usability of our system, we followed Computer-Human Interaction (The Apache Software, 2007) and Iterative Design guidelines (Denning, 1997).

Research Motivation and Goals

The greatest challenge of today’s information system design is to provide users with the required functionality needed for the organization which, in many cases, happens not to be possible or requires huge resources including money, time and highly skilled personnel. Information systems of many Nigerian Universities suffer from some of the following challenges:

  1. Ineffective management of the large amounts and different types of data
  2. Inability to cater for different user categories with various access privileges and restrictions
  3. Lack of related components that need to be integrated together such as registration and academics.
    • Lack of robust, portable and extensible components that support efficient data management.

The objective of the research in this thesis is to develop a robust Implementing a central system for course rating and evaluating by students.
