DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF VETERINARY CARE FOR FISH MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

CHAPTER ONE

Background to the Study

In most developing countries, Agriculture is the main economic activity accounting for large shares of employment and output. In Nigeria for instance over 80 percent of the households and 85 percent of the people live in rural areas and most of these largely depend on Agriculture as their main source of income (Gollin & Rogerson, 2010).

The rapid growth of aquaculture has highlighted many challenges to sustainable development. Aquaculture enterprises, particularly in developing countries, often have low production efficiency, experience episodic production crashes due to fish diseases (Walker and Winton 2010), and contribute to pollution and the loss of mangroves (Phillips et al. 1993; Naylor et al. 1998). Much aquaculture depends on wild stocks, precluding production gains by selective breeding and increasing disease risk. Every year, 20–30 million metric tons of fish, one-third of the global catch, are used to produce feeds for aquaculture. Moreover, gender inequities limit income generation and asset-building for women—in particular poor women—who face multiple barriers, including limited access to technology, infrastructure and credit. Efforts to sustain or accelerate aquaculture growth in developing countries must address breed improvements, fish health, sustainable feeds and environmental management, together with the need for gender- and socially equitable distribution of economic and nutritional benefits.

For fish farm business to be successful, there is need for adoption of a fish farm  management software  which enhances operational capabilities and boosts transparency in the reporting process especially in the areas of stock management, material traceability and transportation of feed, stocks and medicines among other things, all of which will be daunting to be handled without automated veterinary care for fish management system.

A fish farm  management system is a database software system that can be used to record needed or relevant information pertaining a fish farm . The system is needed because of the importance associated with adequately monitoring the activities in a fish farm . Fish farm  information management system according to FAO()2018) entails  various types of information and messages that are relevant to fish farm  management activities. They include information on fish farm  health, production, nutrition, ponds safety,  markets  and security.

Computer based record systems are widely available and should be considered when setting up a record system for fish farm . Software capability to support farm records has grown dramatically in recent years. Different software packages differ in complexity and price. However, the output—balance sheets, cash flow, income statements and enterprise accounts—provide the information necessary for fish farm business planning and management. Computers can be used to generate these documents Carkner (2000).

It is against this background that the present study tends to design and automated veterinary care for fish management system which is capable to handle fish farm  recording such as of feeds, vaccines.

Statement of the problems

The fish farm which is an important component of the agricultural sector continues to be fraught by constraints related to poor management system. In Fish farming, many people today who engage in this practice always face challenges  of improper information keeping records about fish farming because it is  manually operated.

The current system of veterinary care for fish management is paper based, inefficient, tiresome, hard to update, susceptible to errors and time wasting. The automated veterinary care for fish management system will try to solve the query of manual registration

These problem of manually operated production management are highlighted below;

  1. Record of stock are not properly stored.
  2. valuable information may easily be misplaced
  3. It is time consuming.
  4. Inaccuracies often ensue from human error.
  5. Report needed concerning different aspects of the farm can not be easily retrieved when need.

Objectives of the study

The aim of this study is to design and implement a veterinary care for fish management system The specific objectives of the study are :

  1. To design and implement a database application that can be used to maintain and provide information about fishery.
  2. To design and implement a system that provides full process control for the farm.
  3. To design and implement a system that can facilitate the update of a fish farm records.
  4. To design and implement a system that will aid the presentation of report pertaining the diseases and drugs administration of fishery .

                                                                                      Scope of the Study

This research work covers Design and Implementation of veterinary care for fish management system. It is restricted to recording information concerning fish farming and the aspect of vaccines of the fishery.

Significance of the Study

With Improved access to appropriate veterinary care for fish management system, fish farmers are able to make timely decision makings and ignore disastrous decisions which could have reduced on their produce and increased on the costs incurred. In the long run, this increases on the government revenue through taxation on the produce as well as improving on the welfare of fish farmers.

The significance of the study is that it will provide useful information and means to enable the management of the fish farm automate their record keeping process for better updating and presentation of reports.

It will also serve as a useful reference material to other researchers that need related information.

Limitation of the study

This project was constrained by the following factors:

(a) Financial Constraints

Bearing in mind the economic state of the nation, it was found difficult in making both ends meet, because of the exorbitant nature of things nowadays in travelling for the collection of data needed for the project.

(b) Time Constraints

Looking at the interval between the resumption and vacation of the final semester for the project to be completed, the time given seemed to be short for the collection of required information for better work to be done.

Definitions of terms

  • Automation: This is the use of technology or computers to control and process data reducing the need for human intervention.
  • Computerization: This is the conversion of a manually operated system to a controlled, organized and automated system.
  • Database: This refers to a large store of related data on a computer that a user can access and modify.
  • Information System: A collection of procedures, people, instructions and equipment to produce information in a useful form.
  • Inventory Control System: A list of orders to be filled, and prompts workers to pick the necessary items and provides them with packaging and shipping information.
  • Password: This is a secret code that must be entered into a computer to enable access to its applications. It is made up of numbers, letters, special characters or a combination of any of the above categories.
  • Fish farm : Fish farming is a form of aquaculture. The act of fish farming is about raising fish commercially in tanks or enclosures for human consumption.
  • Processing: This is dealing with something according to an established procedure.
  • Research: A careful study of a subject to discover facts, establish a theory or develop a plan of action based on the facts disc1overed.
  • Software: A computer program or set of instructions that direct a computer to perform processing functions.
  • System: A set of computer components functioning together.
  • Technology: The study of techniques of mobilizing resources such as information for accomplishing objectives that benefit man and his environment

A web portal, also known as a links page, presents information from diverse sources in a unified way. Apart from the standard search engine feature, web portals offer other services such as e-mail, news, stock prices, information, databases and entertainment. Portals provide a way for enterprises to provide a consistent look and feel with access control and procedures for multiple   applications and databases, which otherwise would have been different entities altogether. 

1.2   STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Individual websites need to be created so that clients can access their desired information directly.

1.2.1  Solution

The use of metadata and ontologies will enable to model the company organization and to relate these concept to the information.

1.3  OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The practical objective of this work is to design and implement an online resume portal. One of the most important objectives of this project is to contribute to academic research work while the subsidiary objectives include;

  • providing the possibility for job seekers to build their curriculum vitae (CVs) online, look for new job opportunities in industries and organizations, get e-mail notifications of interesting job vacancies and apply directly through the website.
  • to help organizations attract, test, recruit, employ and retain quality staff with minimal amount of administration.
  • to reduce or totally remove IM that goes amongst the recruitment agents or personnel managers.

1.4  SIGNIFICANCE  OF THE STUDY

If this prototype is fully developed will be very useful in many areas such as:

  1. It will ease the work of the personnel department of the any organization.
  2. It will create more employment opportunities for our youths.
  3. The government can also review and deploy it to other sectors.
  4. Private individuals can also find it interesting

1.5   SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This project will go as far as deploying web technologies in the implementation.

Dreamweaver will be use as the major development tool.  Database connection using MySQL will extensively be covered in this work.

Studies were carried out in the various institutions that conduct interviews and recruitments.  The scheme used is closed tag to the information collected at the point of this research.   This project was deployed using a local sever, which runs on a stand alone Pc and not deployable to the internet.

1.6   LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The study was limited by several factors, of which some posed serious constraints towards the development of the project.  One of the major drawbacks was due to financial incapacitation.  This is among other frustrations such as program failures during modular construction stages.

In ability to procure personal internet access for uploading made it difficult for the deployment at testing stag.

Again was the distance and availability of research materials.  It was absolutely difficult to source most of the important information needed for this work.  For instance, collection of information that helped me to develop the forms and database was another serous issue.

1.7    DEFINITION OF TERMS / VARIABLES

WEB: This refers to a vehicle for accessing and sharing of information.

SERVER: A computer or program managing access to a resource or service in a network.

PORTAL: A web application that is designed to represent a ton of information in a concise and centered way thereby making the internet easier to use eg. Yahoo.com, Netscape.com, etc.

ONTOLOGY: Ontology in computer science and information technology is a formal representation of the knowledge by a set of concepts within a domain and the relationship between those concepts.

METADATA: This is loosely defined as data about data. It is a concept that applies mainly to electronically archived data and is used to describe the definition, structure and administration of data file with all contents in context to ease the use of the captured and archived data for further use.

SQL: Structured Query Language is a database computer language designed for managing data in relational database management system (RDBMS) and originally based upon relational algebra. It scope include data query and update, schema creation and modification, and data access control.

DATABASE: This is designed to offer an organized mechanism for storing, managing and retrieving information.

Design and implement E-SIWES management Information

AN OVERVIEW 

Nigerian tertiary institutions must expose students to industrial machinery and equipment, professional work methods, and methods for protecting the workplace and its employees in order to bridge the knowledge gap in fields such as engineering and technology, science, agriculture, medicine, and management.

Knowing full well that training is a critical factor in improving workforce efficiency and expertise, and that no society can achieve meaningful progress without encouraging its youth to acquire necessary practical skills that will enable them to harness available resources to meet societal needs- an innovative phenomenon in human resource development and training in Nigerian tertiary institutions by the industrial training fund (ITF) (ITF). This new occurrence was termed The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), sometimes known as Industrial Training (IT) (IT).

In 1973, the Industrial Training Fund established the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) (ITF). It is a collaborative endeavor including students, universities, and industry. It is financed by the Nigerian federal government and overseen equally by the ITF and the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) (NUC). Post-secondary students (those enrolled in tertiary institutions) can profit from this program by getting experience in the industrial employment environment that they would encounter after graduation. This research discusses a mobile system that can be installed and operated on many mobile platforms (IOS, Android, Windows Phone, and so on) and mobile devices (smartphones and tablets), but is written in web technologies. There are several ways to characterize a mobile-based SIWES placement survey system. This system (Mobile-based SIWES placement survey system) would be a hybrid application that runs inside a native container and renders HTML and JavaScript locally using the device’s browser engine (but not the browser). This method is crucial for avoiding platform-specificity in the system.

There are numerous ways to define a gateway system, depending on your point of view. A portal, in the eyes of a user, is a web system that provides the capabilities and features needed to authenticate and identify persons. It provides a simple, intuitive, tailored, and user-customizable web interface for facilitating access to information and services of critical importance and interest to them. However, to the organization that creates the portal, it is a system that allows the organization to categorize or arrange collections of diverse and many sources of information for dissemination to a large number of users based on their particular rights, needs, and interests. As a result, the primary goal of creating a portal is to efficiently convey vast amounts of information and resources available from several sources to a large number of individuals. A number of projects have been launched in Nigeria and throughout the world to develop portal systems that would make it simpler for higher education institutions to administer and teach their students.

SIWESFEDPOLYOKO is a portal system managed by Anambra State’s Federal Polytechnic, Oko. It is designed to help students who have completed their four-month SIWES course re-establish touch with the University. Students can use the portal’s blog to stay up to speed on their continuing academic program and training obligations.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The University’s problem in dealing with SIWES has yet to be resolved. This concern includes: Difficulty in reading the student’s profile and an inappropriate method of storing student information. The filing of an acceptance letter is a stressful task. As a result, job placement and the weekly SIWES report have been pushed back. The findings of this study will be utilized to develop a user-friendly, cost-effective system that automates virtually all of the actions performed by students and instructors during SIWES.

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES

This project’s goal is to build an Electronic-SIWES administration and processing system. The following are the project’s objectives:

1. Create a Graphical User Interface (GUI) that makes it simple and straightforward to store and retrieve information from the database.

All student and teacher procedures will be digitized.

3. To put in place all of the functionalities required for the proper operation of a SIWES management system.
