EXAMINATION OF MARITIME FREIGHT MOVEMENT IN TIN CAN ISLAND PORT

142

ABSTRACT
This research work critically reviewed the Maritime Freight Movement in Tin Can Island Port. The objectives of study include: to provide likely solution that may help in minimizing port congestion in seaport, to know if there is a balance or not between outgoing and incoming cargoes, to know if the port is productive or not.
In the course of the research, secondary data were collected from statistic department in Tin Can Island and analyzed using two sample t test done, it was discovered that there is a significant balance between outgoing cargo and incoming cargo as the test carried out gave a t-value of 1.848 which is less than the p-value at which a valid conclusion could be made (T > 0.005). The reason being that there is insufficient quay crane available in the port. The outgoing cargo is significant balance to the incoming cargo.
However, the findings revealed Tincan Island Port is measured by the level of increase in inputs and output. The result indicated that 26% of cargoes that entered the port in 2011. It also indicated that it was the maximum so far within the year of study but the minimum was 2%.While 56% of the cargoes left the port in 2011 but the minimum throughput was 2% in 2013.
The findings, in addition, revealed an inversed relationship between the incoming and outgoing cargoes. That is incoming cargoes that was slightly increasing from 2008 to 2010 rapidly increased then later falls in 2013. While the outgoing of cargo fluctuated i.e. it varied in a sinusoidal manner.
