The context in which the word “evangelist” was first employed must be used to determine the theology of this term. There are 72 occurrences of the Greek verb “evangelizes,” which meaning “to proclaim good news,” most frequently in Paul’s letters. Only three times does the noun evangelists, which means “evangelist,” appear1 (Acts 21:8; Eph 4:11; 2 Tim. 4:5). Consequently, evangelism is the spreading or proclaiming of the good news. It should not be defined in terms of certain techniques. Methods may differ greatly as long as their tone corresponds to the intended message (2 Cor. 2:7, 4:2,5).
