MICROBIOLOGICAL STUDY OF NTAMIRI ALONG UMUAGWO AXIS OF THE STREAM

ABSTRACT

Ntamiri River, Along Umuagwo axis were studied over a period of  twelve months to determine the effects of detergent effluent discharges on the aspect of water quality of the river. Water samples from Points A, B and C were screened for microbiological analysis. The results revealed that the level of pollution varied depending on season and that the water quality was acceptable at the upstream (Point A) but became impaired at Points B and C, indicating significant pollution from detergent effluent discharges. The analysis of the microbiological characteristics of water samples from the three points revealed high microbial and faecal contamination with microbial load in the order of 105 and MPN of ≤ 1800. The detergent effluents discharged into Points B and C were found to support the growth of micro organisms such as Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, Streptococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas, Bacillus and Enterobacter species that are pathogenic in nature with higher loads. The results showed that water samples from the river contained toxic substances with higher microbial loads. The detrimental effects of the discharge effluent on the aspect of water quality of Ntamiri River River were discussed.

Abstract

Effectiveness of different doses of neem extracts and a synthetic organic insecticide against mustard aphid was studied in the experimental farm of the Oilseed Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur, during two consecutive years 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 for the control of mustard aphid. Eight treatments were evaluated against mustard aphid under field condition. The maximum aphid population was (180 per plant) observed at the pod formation stage of mustard crop. Among the treatments, Malataf (Malathion 57EC) @ 2ml/l significantly reduced the highest aphid population (93.75%) over pretreatment which produced the highest seed yield (1440 kg/ha) of mustard. The neem leaf extracts reduced 63.16-72.55% aphid population in mustard while neem seed extract reduced 73-81% aphid population over pretreated plants in both the years. Among the different doses of neem extracts, the highest aphid population reduction over pretreatment (81%) was recorded from 50g neem seed per litre of water treated plots with high MBCR (3.88) followed by 75g neem seed/l treated plots having reduction of 80% and MBCR 3.78

CHAPTER ONE/INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

The inadequate supply of clean drinkable waters and the frequent pollution of existing supplies create very grave health problems for people in developing countries like Nigeria. Water serves as a vehicle for the transmission of diseases like typhoid fever, cholera, rashes, diarrhea, dysentery, Gastro-enteritis etc which have contributed immensely to the stagnation of the economic development of some of these nations (Okoufu et al., 1990).

 

In Nigeria, several studies have been carried out in urban areas on ground water contamination (Awalla, 2002; Akpabio and Ebong, 2004; Egbulem, 2003; Ahmed, 2003; Adebayo and Bashire, 2002). The uniform findings from these studies is that groundwater is highly contaminated and clinically unsafe for human consumption. With increasing population densities of urban areas and the corresponding increase in demand for social amenities, it has become increasingly difficult to meet all the water requirements in quantity, regularity and quality. The public water supply is generally inadequate and in most cases inaccessible, the supply is intermittent and unreliable thus resulting into high degree of population densities and concentration of socio-economic activities, it has become increasingly difficult to meet all the water requirements.

 

The public water supply is generally inadequate and in most cases inaccessible, the supply is intermittent and unreliable, thus resulting into high dependency on unsafe supplementary sources such as streams, hand dug wells and ponds (Kakulu and Osibanjo, 1992; Olajire and Imeppeoria, 2001; Nnodu and Ilo, 2002; Owuama and Uzoije, 2005; Ocheri, 2006; Maxwell et al., 2010). Concern over the quality of water harnessed especially from the hand dug wells have received wide attention among researchers (Ovrawah and Hymore, 2001; Ehinola and Coker, 2002; Nnodu and Ilo, 2002; Ogunbadewa, 2002; Omofonmwam and Eseigbe, 2009). Consistent in their findings is that water from hand dug wells are polluted through physical processes, geochemistry of the environment and anthropogenic activities. Consequently consumers of such waters are exposed to series of health risks. This study investigated the bacteriological characteristics of well water in the study area.

Statement of the Problem

Water has been recognized as a potential carrier of diseases and in line with frequent outbreak of typhoid fever, cholera and other water borne diseases; it is pertinent that water be adequately checked and possibly treated particularly well water which is the focus of this work.

Aim and Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to investigate the Microbial Contamination Of Well Water Within Makurdi Meteropolis

The study made up of the following specific objectives;

  1. To investigate the bacteria commonly present in well water in Makurdi
  2. To find out the extent of microbial contamination in well water in different areas of Makurdi
  3. To identify the source of the microbial contamination of well water within Makurdi Metropolis.

Scope of the Study

The study is limited to Makurdi metropolis.Both physico-chemical and bacteriological parameters are considered. The physico-chemical parameters considered are; Turbidity, Potential Hydrogen (pH), Total Dissolved Solid, Iron, Colour, Conductivity, Odour, Chloride, Fluorides and Nitrate while the bacteriological parameters include: Coli- form and Escherichia Coli (E-Coli).

Significance of the Study

The study is significant because it will aid in policy formulation by relevant government agencies and institutions in the formulation of policies regarding water production and distribution in Makurdi metropolis. The study will be of immense importance to members of the public as it can go a long way in enlightening them on the dangers of drinking unsafe and unhygienic water without treatment. Antibiotics susceptibility profile of bacterial isolate from fish pond effluent

ABSTRACT

Fish farming is a recognized means of livelihood in Nigeria; however, the intensive use of antibiotics to prevent infection and increase fish yield calls for concern. This practice may lead to the growth of antibiotics resistant bacteria which contains resistant genes that can be transferred to human pathogens, causing treatment‐ resistant illness. This study investigated the antibiotics susceptibility profile of bacteria isolated from five fish ponds in Benin City using standard microbiological procedures. Isolates were identified using morphological characteristics and conventional biochemical tests, while antibiotic susceptibility test was determined by the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. Results showed that total aerobic count of the ponds ranges from minimum 7.85 x 104 cfu/ml recorded in Ekewan fish pond to maximum 135.06 x 104 cfu/ml recorded in Sapele Road fish pond. Bacteria species isolated were Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus spp and Klebsiella spp, Pseudomonas spp, Proteus spp and E. coli. Frequency of occurrence and percentage distribution of the isolates showed that Bacillus spp had the highest while Klebsiella spp had the lowest. Community fish pond recorded the highest number of isolates while Adesuwa fish pond recorded the lowest number of isolates. Antibiotics susceptibility patterns showed that majority of the isolates were resistant to perfloxacin (85.18%) and amoxicillin (74.81%). It is suggested that the prophylactic and indiscriminate use of antibiotics may be a predisposing factor in the development of antibiotics resistance among the bacteria isolates. This may pose a threat to human population by transferring these resistant genes to other bacteria of human clinical significance.Download Full Material-N5000
