Problem and Prospect In the Implementation Of Solar Energy System in Nigeria

Chapter one/Introduction

Despite Nigeria’s vast potential for renewable energy, many involved in the electricity sector have not given much thought to the possibility of using natural resources that can be used when they are effectively harnessed. Although only a relatively small portion of the population has invested in solar photovoltaic (PV) for household solutions, the effort was only made public and commercialized in 2005 in accordance with the Power Sector Reform Act’s goals and the public private partnership (PPP). Therefore, the goal is to look into the reasons behind the obstacles holding back Nigeria’s solar energy program and get insight into them.

Although Nigeria receives the most sunlight exposure and has the greatest potential for solar PV, solar energy only makes up a small portion of the country’s total electricity production. Nigeria’s location in the solar belt increases its solar potential, but unhappily, the options for utilizing renewable energies are still limited and impractical when compared to traditional forms of electricity.

The open to the sun method has historically been utilized to generate solar energy in the nation, mainly in rural regions, for a variety of purposes. On the other hand, solar electricity generation first appeared about 20 years ago and has since shown continuous expansion. In addition to the significant electricity production deficits, research centers and energy institutions are credited with being the main forces behind the country’s adoption of solar energy. Along with educational and research institutions, activities by national and international organizations have resulted in the construction of the biggest solar-PV plants nationwide. The improvement of the water supply and the upkeep of clinics and healthcare facilities in rural areas are two of the main goals of the various solar electricity generation initiatives.
