INTRODUCTION
Laver (2021)described drug abuse as simply the incorrect use of drugs to the point where the effects are harmful to the user or the community. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), drug abuse is the recurrent use of a drug that results in a condition of periodic or chronic intoxication that is harmful to both the individual and society (natural or synthetic). Drug abuse is the use of drugs for reasons other than medical needs, which has a detrimental impact on the person’s physical, mental, or social well-being.
Paschall (2015). Drug misuse is to blame for lost income, property damage in schools, skyrocketing health care costs, and disintegrated families. It is an issue that has an impact on all of us, including parents, kids, teachers, government employees, taxpayers, and workers.
Cannabis, sativa (also known as marijuana or Indian hemp), cocaine, heroin, morphine, opium, tobacco, and alcohol are among the drugs that are frequently abused. In Nigerian society and in global communities, the selling and usage of these substances has resulted in numerous issues. Due to this, the majority of narcotics are deemed unlawful by law, and both national and international organizations have been set up to monitor and regulate the illicit drug trade. To combat drug misuse and trafficking in the nation, the Federal Government established the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in 1980. Since then, it has detained numerous individuals involved in drug trafficking and seized varying amounts of hard substances.
