THE EFFECT OF STONE QUARRYING ON HOUSING IN OKIGWE LGA

Background of the study

Within the last decade, environmental concerns have gained  prominence  throughout the world. Several international protocols have been established by the global community to deal with the emerging environmental issues. In Kenya, these global changes coincided with the enactment of the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (1999) the law that governs environmental  issues in  the  country.  The Act established the National Environment Management  Authority  (NEMA)  which, among other functions, monitors and evaluates development  activities  to  ensure there is no threat to environmental stability. Activities, such as quarrying in urban areas become significant in this respect.

 

Quarrying is a huge supporter of local economic development; it enhances trade, creating jobs for people annually, creating new habitats sometimes  new  roads  are built, first to transport the machines and then extracted materials which are then left to be used by residents. Most people in quarrying regions wholly depend on these quarrying for their livelihoods aside from other economic activities.

Environmental hazards resulting from quarrying activities dates back to 1890’s (BGS, 2010). The main issues of concern include visual impairment, damage to landscapes, traffic, smoke, noise, dust, damage to  caves,  loss  of  land,  and  deterioration  in  water  quality  (Iqbal  and  Shafig,  2001;  Mate,  1992; Montgomery, 1992). Of major concern is blasting, which is  required to break down the rocks into aggregates. Environmental safety laws and edicts have been adopted by governments of several nations to protect the environment from hazards related to quarrying activities. However, operators of quarries, most especially in developing nations have abused these laws either to maximize profit or simply due to blithe attitude. Such abuse is permeating in Nigeria and Africa as a whole.

 

Quarrying is a very important activity in human life as it helps in the development of infrastructure such as roads in a given area. The quarrying activities that are carried    out by man affect our environment in one way or the other. Both physical and the biological environment are affected by these activities. The effect to  the environment  in most cases is usually negative that is: it cause harm to the environment. The study tried to identify how quarrying activities in Nairobi affects the environment and the people working in or living near the quarries.

Abstract

In case of sudden fire, the concrete elements such as beams, columns etc will be subjected to extreme temperatures and need for assessment of their performance after fire. Hence, it is important to understand the change in the concrete strength properties due to extreme temperature exposure. In this study bagasse ash is used as partial replacement of cement because it is one of the by product which can be used as mineral admixture due to its high content in silica (SiO2), it is also a waste product produced from Sugar manufacturing industry. In this study sugarcane Bagasse ash partially replaced in the ratio of 0%, 5%,10%,15% and 25% by weight of cement in concrete and exposed to different elevated temperature (i.e 2000, 4000, 6000, 8000 ) for 1 hour and immediately cooled with water. The result shows that the strength of Concrete specimens increased at 2000C than room temperature for all percentage of replacement of cement with SCBA.

Abstract

This paper examined the maintenance state of Osun- Osogbo grove in Osogbo – which is an organically evolved cultural edifice and landscape associated with the Yoruba traditional religion and culture. This was with a view to unfolding the level of deterioration, identifying the causes of decay, and providing appropriate maintenance solutions. In order to carry out this assessment, selected cultural properties like the first palace, the second palace, scared spaces, individual shrines, Osun worship points in the grove, Oja- Ontoto shrine, the sculptures, the suspension bridge, were examined through physical surveys. The analysis is also dependent on data procured through the administration of questionnaire. Findings revealed that these cultural properties were generally ill-maintained and in a serious state of disrepair. It is also confirmed that the main factors affecting maintenance of these cultural properties were inadequate funds for maintenance, high cost of repairs and poor construction techniques. There is no specialized organization to inspect the monuments and advise for efficient maintenance regularly. It is mainly through maintenance of heritage buildings that cultural significance of these monuments can be sustained for the need of upcoming generation. This would be difficult to achieve if the best practice approach to the maintenance and management of heritage properties is not fully adopted.

Investigate On Effect Of Water Quality On Concrete Material In Tropical Region Of Nigeria

Abstract

The Effect Of Water Quality On Concrete Material In Tropical Region Of Nigeria. was evaluated in this study. A total of 100 concrete cubes (150 x 150 x 150 mm) were cast using a mix ratio of 1:2:4. The hardened concrete cubes were de-moulded 24 hours after the cubes were cast and were submerged carefully in a curing tank filled with water. The physico-chemical characteristics of the water used in mixing the concrete was determined according to standard procedures. A slump test was conducted to determine the workability of concrete. Compressive test was carried out on the hardened concrete at 7, 14, 28 days, respectively. Results showed that the physiochemical characteristics of the all the water samples examined fell within acceptable limits set by the World health Organization (WHO) except for the iron, magnesium, and lead contents which were grossly out of acceptable limits. From the slump result obtained, the source of water in mixing concrete doesn’t affect the workability of concrete. The study also revealed that irrespective of the type of water used in making concrete, the development in strength increases with an increase in age.
