The Role Of Radio And Television Broadcasting Services In Curbing Youth Restiveness During The ENDSARS Protests

Abstract

The study investigates Broadcasting Services In Curbing Youth Restiveness During The ENDSARS Protests. There is no gainsaying that media influence has not  increased tremendously in the last 10 decade, researchers are yet to agree on the degree and magnitude of its influence in crisis dispute and resolution efforts as witness during the ENDSARS rally. The television and radio  are always known to set agenda for the public to follow; this they do by raising salient issues, occurrences and reporting events as they happen in the society and bringing them to the public domain. More importantly, the media set agenda of peace, love, unity etc. recently , Nigeria has been marked  by one form of crises or the other most especially the recent ENDSARS protest which nearly plunged Nigeria into chaos; this in turn leads to loss of lives and properties both private and government owned properties. This research work therefore attempts to examine the relevant role played by the radio and television arms of the media in resolving the lingering endsars protest in Nigeria . In addition, the research work critically examines the way and manner the media have been used to manage the Endsars protest in Nigeria in the year 2020. The scope  of this study was restricted to only to radio and television medias. The research utilized both primary and secondary method of data collection. Instruments were adopted in gathering information for quality work. Instruments such as News-papers, scholars work, internet, radio, journals and television were used to gather information about the activities carried out by the media in endsars situations. Other methods adopted were through questionnaires and interviews. Findings show that the media have a crucial role to play in conflict resolution. Findings further show that the radio and television have not been giving objective reports during the endsars crises and this tends to escalate the crises. Based on the findings, the research work concludes that the extent to which the media are used to resolve protests staged by youths is minimal and recommends, among others, that the radio and television broadcast should be constantly used to preach peace and not hate so as to bring about lasting peace in Nigerian states.
